A Family-Friendly Luxury Experience at Château de La Chaize

There are travel moments that linger in your memory—not just because of where you were, but because of how you were made to feel. Our visit to Château de La Chaize, nestled in the Beaujolais region of France, was one of those rare, luminous experiences. Equal parts elegance, history, warmth, and whimsy, it was a luxury escape that somehow managed to include everyone in our family—from grandparents to toddlers to a four-month-old baby.

We had booked the estate’s signature In the Footsteps of the Marquis de Montaigu experience during our stay in Lyon, and while we expected beautiful wine and a stunning setting, what we didn’t anticipate was just how inclusive, private, and meaningful the visit would be.

A Private Tour on Historic Grounds

One of the most extraordinary elements of the visit? The tour is entirely private. During our reserved time, we were the only guests at the château. There were no other tours running, no outside interruptions—just our family and the staff. That kind of exclusivity made the entire experience feel incredibly intimate and serene, as if we had stepped into another world for a few hours.

We were greeted by our guide, Chloé, who set the tone for the day with genuine warmth and a personal touch that went well beyond what we typically experience at wine estates. She wasn’t just guiding us—she was hosting us. And she made sure every single member of our group, especially our children, felt not just welcome but truly seen.

Traveling with Kids? This Château Says “Yes.”

We were visiting with our three-year-old and four-month-old, and while that can sometimes feel daunting at destinations rooted in tradition and refinement, this tour proved how luxury and family-friendliness can absolutely coexist.

Chloé instantly bonded with our three-year-old, who happily spent most of the tour outdoors, hunting for the robotic lawn mowers that buzzed quietly across the expansive lawns. Chloé held her hand the entire time outside, guiding her gently between trees and fountains, pointing out secret garden spots and “hidden treasures” just for her to discover. It wasn’t an act—it was care, patience, and genuine connection.

Meanwhile, our baby was wide awake and fully immersed, happily observing the colors, textures, and sounds of the vineyard. At one point, we paused for a break in the grass, and he wriggled joyfully in the sunshine, completely at peace. We brought a travel stroller, which worked well for most of the estate (the paths and gardens are mostly stroller-accessible), and we only needed a baby carrier for one brief cellar portion that had a few stairs.

Every single staff member was kind, thoughtful, and accommodating—not just tolerant of kids, but delighted by them. It was clear that each guest is treated personally, with flexibility and attention tailored to their needs.

Living History, Beautifully Told

The In the Footsteps of the Marquis de Montaigu tour is about much more than tasting wine. It’s a journey through time—starting with the château’s 17th-century architecture and culminating in one of the largest gravity-fed cellars in France. The estate is steeped in history, from its early innovations in sustainable winemaking to its elegant gardens, which have been carefully restored to honor their original French formal design.

Chloé was a phenomenal storyteller, weaving history, art, and viticulture into a narrative that felt alive. She adapted her explanations perfectly depending on whether she was speaking to us, or to our children. Everyone felt engaged.

The Wine: A Highlight, Naturally

Of course, the wine was exceptional—graceful and bold, with an undeniable sense of place. The estate specializes in Brouilly wines, which we sampled during a beautifully set private tasting. Even with children by our sides, we were able to savor each glass slowly, in a peaceful and elegant setting.

The tasting was unhurried, and with the children content and entertained, we actually had time to connect with the wine—and each other. That alone felt like a luxury.

As if the day couldn’t get more memorable, we were interviewed by a local news crew that was on site to film a segment. Our toddler was thrilled, and it added a special energy to an already magical day.

A Multigenerational Memory

While we each had our own favorite parts of the tour, my father called this his favorite experience of our entire trip to Lyon. Watching him take in the history, sip the wine, and connect with the space was something we’ll treasure forever.

But what struck us most was how this experience held something for everyone. It wasn’t just about wine or history or architecture—it was about connection, legacy, and hospitality. And that made it unforgettable.

Final Thoughts: A Place to Return To

Château de La Chaize is so much more than a winery—it’s a celebration of French heritage, thoughtful luxury, and personalized hospitality. And it reminded us that true luxury isn’t just about exclusivity—it’s about being welcomed, understood, and cared for, no matter your age.

Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with children, or in a multigenerational group, this is a destination that proves exceptional experiences don’t need to be adult-only.

We left filled with good wine, happy children, inspired hearts—and plans to return.
